Our March Quality Time Story Contest Winner

I really enjoy reading the wonderful stories submitted in our monthly Quality Time Story Contest.

We created the contest to encourage families to share anecdotes about events and activities that have brought them closer together.

As you can see from our March contest winner, family members come in all shapes and sizes. On a personal note, we recently welcomed a new Dachshund puppy to our household. Already she’s become a cherished member of our family, although not a hero like Velcro (at least, not yet).

“Our only child, Velcro”

“My husband, Alvin, and I never had the opportunity to have children of our own. So we have always had a furbaby. Velcro, so named because she sticks to you, came into our lives about a year ago. She is a rescue who was found wandering on the street on a cold winter day. They estimate that she was about two months old when found.

Velcro’s claim to fame is that she saved another dog’s life. We live right next door to our vet, Dr. William Mandel. For your information, all dogs have the same blood type. Last September one of the vet techs in Dr. Mandel’s office called me in a panic. It seems that a young dog had been hit by a car and needed surgery. They wanted to know if Velcro would give blood to the pup. After I determined that no harm would come to Velcro I let her donate. They came over and got her, took her next door, put her to sleep and took the blood. In two hours she was back home, a little sleepy, wearing a “I GAVE BLOOD” sticker on her right, front paw.

For family time we take Velcro to the dog park several nights during the week. It gives her the opportunity to run and see her dog friends. Alvin and I always share a light picnic dinner. I prepare little sandwiches, sometimes tuna salad, sometimes egg salad, sometimes turkey and sometimes whatever I have on hand on a variety of Sister Schubert rolls. We round out our light meal with cut vegetables or fruit. We round out our meal with something sweet. And, of course, there is always a sandwich for Velcro. She loves your rolls. The outing gives Al and I a chance to reconnect and enjoy each other’s company.”

Don’t forget to enter our Mother’s Day Story Contest by May 6. The winner will receive a $500 gift card as well as a large, hand-painted gift basket filled with Sister Schubert’s rolls and specialty products.

I look forward to reading your stories about what Mom means to you.

Until next time,sister
