Do your homework: Farmer's markets can vary in terms of quality, selection and price, so do some research before heading out. Local newspapers, the Web and old-fashioned word of mouth are all excellent sources. Also, take time to determine which fruits and vegetables might be in season in your area and plan meals around what you find.
Pack accordingly: Unlike climate-controlled supermarkets, farmers markets are subject to the whims of weather. Check the forecast and bring umbrellas, sweaters or anything else you may need to stay comfortable. Depending on how much you want to buy, bring reusable shopping bags, coolers or anything else you might need to get your purchases home.
Arrive early (or late): Get to the market as close to opening time as possible for the best selection and freshest produce. If you're looking for deals, go near closing time when vendors offer discounts to get rid of inventory.
Make conversation: The vendors at farmers markets are much closer to their product, so don't be afraid to ask questions and strike up conversations. You'll never know what interesting fact you'll learn or new recipe you'll pick up!
