It was Christmas Eve of 1956. I had turned five years old in October. Earlier that year I had been stricken with a form of Musclar Dystrophe. I couldn't walk at all, so my mother carried me everywhere we went. On Christmas Eve she took me to the grocery store with her to buy some last minute items for Christmas dinner. She put me in the seat of the cart as we started through the store. Immediately I spotted a box sitting on top of one of the freezer cases. In it was a beautiful doll dressed in a blue evening gown and high heels. I remember asking my mother if I could have it. She said we couldn't afford it. Mother finished her shopping and we headed home. Christmas morning a car pulled into our driveway and a man got out. It was the grocery store owner. He had overheard us talking about the doll so he brought me that beautiful doll as a Christmas present. Every Christmas I think about that Christmas doll and the kindness of that man. So every Christmas I try to do something special for as many people as I can.
